Pangborn Elementary School:

Peace is more than a lesson plan!

-

During June, 2013, Pangborn Elementary in Hagerstown, Maryland became the first school to choose Peace Certification by the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation.

-

With the support of Mattie’s Foundation, Peace Certification participants create a personal or community Peace Plan as they “Reflect, Respond, and Reach Out” with peace.

-

The Peace Plan  is an important component of Certification journey — it supports individuals or communities of all ages in moving from attitude to action.

-

However, one of the most important goals of the program is to empower participants in moving peace from a To Do task or project to a To Be goal and character trait.

-

Once an individual or community Peace Plan is completed, the ultimate challenge is “What Next?”

-

What PES chose to do after receiving their Peace Certificate is exemplary –  they created a peace curriculum plan to be implemented throughout the 2013-2014 school year. The faculty and staff work hard each week to create activities and incentives that not only educate students about peace, but also motivate them to make peace their choice.

Examples of the PES 2013-2014 Peace Climate Plan include Positive Reports, Peace Days, Peace Celebrations, Peace Ambassadors, Peace Assemblies, Peace Chats with Mattie’s mom, and much, much more.

In addition, PES is expanding their Peace Plan and gathering translations of Mattie’s “Recipe for Peace” poem from the diverse group of staff and families.

Peace is a part of the school’s daily news program, it is a part of many lesson plans and activities, and it is a part of of the social environment from the bus to the classroom, and from the cafeteria to the playground.

At Pangborn Elementary, peace is no longer simply a lesson plan

peace is a choice,

and peace is a way of learning and living each day in the school.
