The Who’s ROGER DALTREY Accepts the
2018 Mattie J.T. Stepanek Peacemaker Award

“When the worlds of legendary rock, meet dance and funk, meet hip hop,
it will be a music celebration like no other!”

– Nile Rodgers, Grammy Award-winning Musician, Humanitarian,
and Founder of the We Are Family Foundation.

=

The We Are Family Foundation honored The Who’s Roger Daltrey CBE and entertainment icon, LL COOL J at the annual Celebration Gala on April 27, 2018 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. The event celebrated longtime peacemakers and humanitarians while raising funds to support the work WAFF does with young peacemakers and humanitarians through the Just Peace Summit (based on Mattie’s peace message and final book) and their Three Dot Dash program. It is (truly) “the best party of the year.”

Daltrey — legendary frontman for the 1970s rockbound The Who and famous for the music that created the hit “Tommy” — was honored for his humanitarian work, including his role with the Teenage Cancer Trust. The Trust is a non-profit that enhances psychosocial care for adolescent oncology patients. Daltrey has been a part of this effort for decades,  helping to grow this effort throughout the United Kingdom, and is now bringing the work the United States.

-

Other 2018 honorees and VIPs included LL Cool J (who received the WAFF Humanitarian Award), “Parkland Teens” (students representatives speaking out about gun control and anti violence following a recent shooting at their Florida high school), and Nile Rodgers and Chic (who performed an incredible concert with Daltrey and LL Cool J.

Message from Mattie’s Mom:
On Jeni’s Thriving Heartsong

Thank you to all for sharing your lovely and inspirational thoughts in response to this month’s Washingtonian Magazine article about Mattie and me. In many ways, the piece is beautiful. But I do want to re-assure everyone that I am still defying all medical odds, and moving through each day with purpose and gratitude and a celebration of life.
-
I am working and playing and living and praying. Yes, I have many medical challenges and they can be life-threatening, and I rely on much medical support every day – from the ventilator and oxygen to the wheelchair and IV fluids to a pacemaker and more… but despite it all, I look good (yay) and I am doing quite well (super yay).
-
None of us knows how much time we really have on earth. I guess, like Mattie (and many others who have statistical odds stacked heavily against them due to multiple life-threatening conditions), I am keenly aware of the sacred gift of each moment. So – by choice – I endeavor to give depth to each of those moments, which somehow helps me focus less on length of living.
-
That said, I also am hoping to reach my goal: “When I grow up, I want to be 83, and a beach chair philosopher.”
-
I am ever-grateful for ongoing prayers, which I believe has much to do with how well I am doing at this time – despite everything I have been through and continue to go through medically and emotionally.
-
Today, and each tomorrow, I encourage each of you to take a deep breath, and with purpose, exhale with the words “wow!” (about something or someone in your life) and “thank you!” (about you and your gift of life, and the gift you can choose to be for others).
-
Moving forthward with hope and gratitude.
Jeni (Mattie’s mom / Mama Peace).
-
PS — this article should have had a word like “resilience” or “purpose” or “gratitude” or “forthward” or “hope” in the title, and a bit more balance in the text which seemed to highlight the burdens more than the blessings… missed opportunity by the editors, even though the overall piece offers inspiration.

City of Rockville to Proclaim
2018 Peace Day during Council Meeting

-
During the July 2, 2018 City Council meeting, the City of Rockville will issue the annual Peace Day Proclamation, declaring Mattie’s July 17 birthday to be a day of peace for local citizens, and stating support for the Peace Day Party celebration. The City has been declaring Peace Day every year since Mattie died in 2004. In 2017, the Mayor and Council voted to make Mattie’s Peace Day an annual event in perpetua, and celebrate with a peace gathering for local and global neighbors of all ages.
-
The Peace Day event in Rockville, Maryland is the local celebration of a larger campaign for  a National Peace Day. Since 2014, the Foundation has been campaigning to move the Peace Day concept to a national level. A Congressional Resolution was issued in support of the campaign back in 2014. And in 2017, the City of Rockville voted to mark the day on the City calendar “forevermore” — making it the city in the country to make peace an ongoing priority with a dedicated date for celebration. In 2018, Maryland State Senator Cheryl C. Kagan, along with dozens of other elected officials, sent a letter to the state governor requeting that the state follow the lead of this City, and issue proclaim Peace Day in Maryland each year as well.
=
As that decision is awaiting, the annual Peace Day celebration in Rockville is being planned, and will be celebrate on Saturday, July 14. The event will take place in the streets by the King Farm Village Green, which will be filled with tents for entertainment and activities that offer children and adults chance to learn more about Mattie’s peace message with food and fun and music and dance and arts and crafts and games and more. Hosted by Mattie’s Foundation with support from the City of Rockville and the King Farm Citizen’s Assembly, the local Peace Day gathering aims to help people understand — through recreation and education — how peace begins and grows through personal choices in attitudes and habits. The 2018 event will offer an array of hands-on activities and “Community Conversation” opportunities as a source of inspiration and information, in a festive atmosphere with music and games and more.
-
The City has also expressed a desire to include elements of Mattie’s peace message and the Foundation’s “Pathways to Peace” program in other events and trainings that support citizens in growing forward together — such as their celebrate diversity and sister city activities.
-
The 2018 Peace Day Gathering takes place on Saturday, July 14. Join Mattie’s Foundation, the City of Rockville, King Farm Citizen’s Assembly, Mix107.3 Radio, Botanero Restaurant, Fontina Grille, Coffee Republic, The Black & Tan Band, local police and fire and education representatives, ZamDance, Rockville Kick’s Karate,  Jump In & Dance, and a brigade of “Peace Guides” who will engage participants in activities and conversation — with purpose, for peace. The outdoor activities (including the band, dancing, crafts, moon bounce, and face painting take place from 1-4 pm, with the Peace Day proclamation and cake cutting ceremony beginning at 2 pm. The indoor activities — which include community and elected leaders serving as Guest Bartenders — run from 1-7 pm in Botanero and Fontina restaurants (both on corners beside the Peace Day event), with a classical guitarist performance to take place during the 4-7 pm timeframe.
The 2018 Peace Day Gathering is FREE — though donations are encouraged. Mattie’s Foundation will have a Peace Shop open from 1-4 pm with shirts, wristbands, books, and a variety of peace items available. And 15 percent of the proceeds from food and signature drinks at Botanero and Fontina Grille restaurants during 1-7 pm will be donated to support the peace mission of the Mattie’s Foundation — so please “eat and drink generously!”

Read an excerpt from Mattie’s “Just Peace book. This 7-paragraph e-mail was written more than a decade ago as an outline for a school assignment. The message Mattie shared so many years ago is still relevant —  and needed — today.

-

Please take a few minutes to read these thoughts from Mattie.

-

This is one of the last messages Mattie ever wrote. He was not strong enough to complete the essay he planned in this e-mail. But his passion for and love for all of humanity never wavered, and I believe that today, he is kneeling in prayer — with hope, for peace.
