Organized by

Rockville, Maryland

July 2008

To benefit the

Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation

In addition, the City of Rockville and Montgomery County, Maryland

proclaimed their 2nd Mattie Stepanek Week.

MATTIE STEPANEK WEEK … The Montgomery County Council on July 8 declared July 7-13 as “Mattie J.T. Stepanek Week” in honor of the remarkable County resident who died in 2004 at age 13 from a severe form of muscular dystrophy. Mattie began writing poetry at age 3, some of which evolved into the book Heartsongs. That book, like many his writings, promoted harmony, peace and hope. On Sunday, July 13, at the Rockville Municipal Swim Center, the Mattie Stepanek Foundation held its second annual ‘Mattie’s Heartsong Swim’ to raise funds toward expanding the handicapped accessibility of the 26-acre Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park at King Farm in Rockville and toward the installation and dedication of a statue of Mattie and his service dog, Micah. Presenting a proclamation on behalf of the Council to Mattie’s mother, Jeni, were Councilmembers Phil Andrews, left, and George Leventhal.
