Exploring Happiness:
Thoughts on Surviving, and Thriving, Despite Life Challenges
Jeni Stepanek, PhD-
_ -

Jeni Stepanek, an award-winning speaker and NY Times Bestselling author, is a noted advocate for personal and world peace, and for children’s and families’ needs and rights in health and education. The author of “Messenger: The Legacy of Mattie J.T. Stepanek and Heartsongs,” Jeni’s inspirational message about hope, peace, disability, hospice, grief, support, parenting, collaboration, motivation, and spirituality has been carried by all media outlets.

-
Like her son, the late bestselling poet and peace advocate, Mattie J.T. Stepanek, Jeni has a rare neuromuscular disease, and relies on a ventilator and wheelchair for breathing and mobility. A noted guest on Good Morning America, Oprah, Larry King and The MDA Labor Day Telethon, Mattie created poetry and essays from age 3 until he passed away in 2004 at age 13, and published seven books that all became NY Times Bestsellers. Mattie is the youngest of Jeni’s four children. All four — Katie, Stevie, Jamie, and Mattie — died during childhood due to complications of the genetic neuromuscular disease Jeni unknowingly passed on to the children before she was diagnosed.
-
In addition to losing all of her children and dealing with her own progressive disability, since 2015 Jeni has also been dealing with severe medical complications related to treatment for aggressive cancer. Yet, she continues to “celebrate life – with gratitude, every day, in some way,” and she vows that when she grows up, she wants “to be 83 and a beach chair philosopher.”
-
During her 2013 Keese Lecture presentation, Jeni shared the story of her son, Mattie, and his inspirational message of hope and peace. During her March 2017 presentation, Jeni will share her own story and experiences, and her thoughts on “three types of happiness” that can help each of us not only survive life’s many challenges, but also thrive despite the burdens that are folded in with the blessings.
-
Jeni is a Faculty Associate in Special Education at the University of Maryland, and she serves as the Executive Director of the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation. For more information, please visit www.MattieOnline.com.

Why Mattie Still Matters: The Life and Legacy of Mattie J.T. Stepanek
Jennifer Smith Stepanek, Ph.D., Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation
Raymond Arroyo, Managing Editor, EWTN News
March 14 at 2:30 pm — Hyattsville, MD
Learn more about the late poet and author Mattie Stepanek, who died at the age of 13 in 2004.   Many know about Mattie’s health challenges, but few know he was a teen catechist & lector here in our Archdiocese.  Mattie’s life and message was based on his profound connection to his faith, his belief of God’s love and mercy, coupled with a commitment to choosing hope and peace.  Dr. Stepanek is the author of Messenger: The Legacy of Mattie J.T. Stepanek and Heartsongs.  Raymond Arroyo, host of ETWN’s The World Over news program, will share more of Mattie’s story as a teen catechist who spoke to millions through his Heartsongs poetry books, his book on peacemaking, Just Peace, and through his many television, radio appearances.  Arroyo will introduce the newly formed Guild to promote his cause for sainthood now underway (mattiescause.com).   More information on Mattie’s life and work is at www.mattieonline.com
Mass with Cardinal Wuerl beings at 4 pm.
