Established in 2005, the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation endeavors to make Mattie’s message of hope and peace available and accessible across time and space. The Foundation creates materials and activities for youth and adults that:
Encourage peacemaking as a deliberate and personal choice.
- Foster an understanding of Mattie’s Heartsongs and our “reason for being.”
Spread Mattie’s belief that peace is rooted in balancing the basic needs of all people.
Since its formation, the Foundation has collaborated with other individuals and organizations promoting peace for our world. From 2005 through 2008, the Foundation worked with the City of Rockville, Maryland to create the Peace Garden in the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park, complete with a life-size bronze of Mattie and his service dog, Micah. Since then, the Foundation has initiated peace-related projects, activities, and events for people of all ages and abilities, and collaborated with other peace-oriented organizations.
In 2010, the Foundation initiated the For Our World Campaign which reached citizens around the globe. who translated or downloaded free copies of Mattie’s 9/11 peace poem. The poem is now available in more than 50 languages from Albanian to Zulu. In 2011, the Foundation launched the What Next? Project, rooted in Mattie’s Three Choices for Peace.
The Foundation is also further developing a Pathways to Peace Program and a Peace Certification Program. These programs offer developmentally-appropriate materials and activities for children and youth, as well as inspirational and informational materials and activities for teens and adults. Each ‘Pathways Station’ explores key elements of Mattie’s message, such as Heartsongs, hope, peace, life, mosaics, and choice. The Certification Program is for teachers, parents, leaders, families, schools, businesses — any individual or group seeking to learn more about peace, and Mattie’s message.
