Mattie said “personal peace begins within each of us when our needs are met, but world peace begins when we reach beyond ourselves, and consider and tend to the needs of others.” He also said that we must ”choose to see possibilities — tasks, chores, sharing, even donations of money, time, energy, and other resources — as opportunities to make a difference.” When we support the needs of others — through the choice to give of our time, our talent, our treasure, or a combination of these gifts — we become a sponsor for peace.

Potomac Valley Brick & Supply Company is a Montgomery County, Maryland based masonry and building materials supplier. Beyond being a reputable family-run business, it is a company run by people who strive to serve as role models for peace in the community and for our world. When Alan Richardson (one of the original owners of the nearly 40-year old business) and his wife Kathleen Richardson (the company’s Director of Human Resources) realized that Mattie’s Foundation was in need of an in-kind sponsor for the Gift Brick sponsorship program, they immediately offered to provide installation of the pavers once or twice a year at no cost to the Foundation. As a result, the funding usually required to pay for brick installation now goes directly to the Foundation’s programming and outreach activities. This gift of time, talent, and treasure directly supports the mission of Mattie’s Foundation, which is to spread Mattie’s message of peace.

Now, as we celebrate individuals and groups who move from “attitude to action” to spread peace in our world, the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation honors Potomac Valley Brick Supply Co. as our Peace Sponsor Spotlight Honoree for our May-June post.

Below are responses

What would you like to share about your business?

My name is Kathleen Richardson, and I am the Director of Human Resources for Potomac Valley Brick & Supply Company. My husband, Alan Richardson, is one of the original owners of the company, which was founded in 1976. He has been the sole owner since 2000. I began working at the company almost 15 years ago, shortly after my marriage to Alan.

PVB is a brick and building materials supplier in the Washington and Baltimore Metropolitan areas. We have just added two new locations this year, by expanding to the Eastern Shore. At PVB, we believe that there is “more to value than just the lowest price. Timely delivery of material keeps projects under budget and on schedule.” In addition to materials and services, we also assist architects and builders in the proper design and use of masonry products.

Tell us a bit about your family which runs the company.

When Alan and I were married in July, 1998, we became a blended family of seven.  All five of our children are now in their twenties. Our oldest is getting married this summer and our youngest is graduating from college this spring.

Our two sons are also employed with Potomac Valley Brick, which is a great experience — watching them grow professionally. While blending a family has its challenges, we strive to give the kids a loving and safe environment. We work together as a family to show support of one another.

How did you learn about Mattie and our Foundation?

We first learned of Mattie and his writings when our oldest child was diagnosed with a chronic illness 13 years ago. I went to a book store to look for inspirational books because my daughter is such an avid reader. We fell in love with Mattie’s works.

Mattie truly sent the message of inspiration to all who were lucky enough to read his books! Through his inspiration, we are reminded to live intentionally and peacefully.

Once or twice a year, Gift Bricks are ordered with messages from sponsors. Gift Brick sponsorship is a creative way to become a part of history with a personalized message in Mattie’s Park & Peace Garden, while also supporting the peace mission of Mattie’s Foundation.

How do you support peace through Mattie’s Foundation?

Potomac Valley Brick supports Mattie’s Foundation by providing installation of personalized Gift Bricks in Mattie’s Park & Peace Garden once or twice a year. The Gift Brick sponsorships allow people around the world to place a personalized message in the Peace Garden area of the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park, while also supporting a mission of hope and peace for our world.

My family wholeheartedly believes in a peaceful existence. We are in awe of Mattie’s message and strive to live by his example. Potomac Valley Brick is honored to participate in such a meaningful legacy.

Any other thoughts you would like to share?

We are humbled and excited to help spread Mattie’s message through our community. We were so pleased to donate our time and labor for the Gift Brick sponsorship program.  As a family and as a company, we enjoy giving back to our community.
