First Peace Certified School

Expands “Peace Climate” in Year Two

Positive Referrals, Peace Ambassadors,

Recipe for Peace Translations, and more!

Pangborn Elementary School ELL Teacher, Tilsim Newman (second from right) introduced Mattie’s message of peace to the school years ago. Today, the school has developed a “Climate of Peace.”

Pangborn Elementary School ELL Teacher, Tilsim Newman, introduced Mattie’s message of peace to the school in Hagerstown, Maryland years ago.
In 2012-2013, PES became the first Peace Certified School by the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation. The Peace Plan the school developed included an exploration of Mattie’s poem, “Recipe for Peace,” and a school-wide poster contents.
After receiving their Peace Certificate in June, 2013, the faculty and staff chose to move peace from a “project for certification” to a “climate for learning” and everyday choice.
In addition to creating motivating activities and programs such as Positive Referrals, Peace Days, Peace Ambassadors, and Peace Chats, PES also began expanding their original Peace Plan.
The original plan resulted in a  ”peace recipe” poster from every class in the school. The expansion involves translating the poem, and displaying Mattie’s message in other languages on school bulletin boards.
The school is rich with diversity, and already, PES families and staff members have contributed several translations.
