Peace Sponsor

Winter/Spring 2014

Greg Jones

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

(with Travelers Insurance)

=

Greg Jones has always endeavored to seek and make and bring peace to others. A few years ago, he learned about Mattie and the message of hope and peace Mattie shared from his son, Jacob, who was about the same age Mattie was when he wrote many of his essays and poems.

=

Across the years, Greg and his family have become more and more involve with peace activities and the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation. And, for the more than two years, they have been doubling their donations to the Foundation through Greg’s work, and the Travelers Insurance Community Connections Matching Gift Program.

-

Now, as we celebrate individuals and groups who give of their time, their talent, and their treasure to support and share peace with others, the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation  honors with deep appreciation – Greg Jones – our Winter/Spring 2014 Peace Sponsor Spotlight.

Greg Jones — Peace Sponsor Spotlight Feature

Below are Greg’s responses to some of our interview questions.

Greg Jones of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (3rd from left) with his family (L-R) Nathan, Sammy, Isabella, Jane, Jacob, and Nicolette, during a summer visit to the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park in Rockville, Maryland.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

-

My name is Greg Jones. I live with my family near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in a town called South Park.

-

My wife, Jane, and I have been married since  1992, and we have five children — Nicolette, Nathan, Jacob, Samuel, and Isabella. Our oldest is in her first year college and our youngest started kindergarten this past fall.

-

I enjoy spending time with my family, and we are active members of our church community. I also enjoy coaching grade school basketball and soccer.

-

Since April, 2006, I have been an Auto Appraiser for Travelers Insurance.

-

In 2011 I was awarded the “In-Sync” award at Traveler’s Insurance for customer service. The award was given to me for helping save another man’s life.

-

I was to meet a customer on a winter morning at his residence to view damage on his car. The location where I was to meet him changed though. When I arrived at the updated location, I noticed a man lying under a vehicle. It appeared that he had fallen on the ice and hit his head.

-

Immediately upon seeing him, I applied medical attention until help arrived. I was told by the medical staff that if I had not found the man and assisted so quickly, he would have bled to death from his injuries.

-

It turned out that the man I found was the person I was to meet that morning. He is doing fine now. And I realize that I was able to set an example for my children and other people that helping another person is the right thing to do. It is a part of peace.

-

A short time after this incident, my family and I got to know Jeni Stepanek, Mattie’s mom and the Executive Director of Mattie’s Foundation. As we learned more about Mattie’s message of peace, we also began to get active in Foundation activities and events.

-

Later that year, I realized that we could not only provide some level of financial support to Mattie’s Foundation, but that we could also double that support through a program at my job. Since 2011, anything we have given to Mattie’s Foundation has been doubled through the Travelers Insurance Community Connections Matching Gift Program. This helps the Foundation, and we feel really good about being able to support the spreading of peace and Mattie’s message.

What does peace mean to you?

-

Peace means a world where everyone is respectful of others.

-

My family and I try to be active in learning about peace, and in sharing peace with others. Our younger children are members of Mattie’s Peace Club Kids, and the whole family is registered as Peace Club Members. Now, we are working to become a Peace Certified Family through Mattie’s Foundation.

In 2011, we attended the Peace Celebration held in Mattie’s Park in Maryland. Before the event, we created materials for one of the Pathways to Peace Stations that would be a part of the Peace Celebration. And during the event, we all volunteered as Peace Guides, leading activities at different Pathways to Peace Stations.

-

Being active in peace matters. Participation by my wife and I helps teach our children that peace matters, and that we must make time for peace. It also helps them learn to respect and treat other as they would like to be treated.

-

How did you learn about Mattie and Mattie’s Foundation?

-

My wife watched an episode of The Oprah Show on which Mattie was a guest.  My son, Jacob, was in the room, and looked up and saw someone named Jeni Stepanek talking about her son — a boy who wanted peace for our world. Interested in learning more, Jacob began asking his mom questions about Mattie, and about peace, and was soon reading Mattie’s Heartsongs books.

-

Our family then decided to make Mattie’s Park in Rockville, Maryland a part of our annual vacation plans. For the past few years, we have stopped at the park for a visit with Mattie’s mom, either on our way to or from the Outer Banks in North Caroline.

-

Jacob’s interest in Mattie and peace inspired our family to learn more, and become active in Mattie’s Foundation. Jacob was one of the very first member of Mattie’s Peace Club Kids when the program was first launched in 2011, and he was celebrated as the Foundation’s very first Peace Spotlight feature ever during Spring 2012.

Now, I have read all the books Mattie has published. All of his writing and teaching sends the same message — a message of hope and peace. My family and I are especially inspired by Mattie’s quote, “Remember to play after every storm!

Through reading his books and participating in all of these activities, our family has learned that Mattie wanted everyone to treat all others with respect and kindness regardless of beliefs or where they are from, and regardless of challenges people face during life. And, that is how we want to live as well. We celebrate peace — and we play after every storm!

-

Is there anything else you would like to share?

-

It is an honor to be recognized as Peace Spotlight by Mattie’s Foundation. World peace starts with one person, who shares a message of peace with another person, and that person shares with another and so on.

-

If the message does not continue to be spread, the goal of world peace will be stopped. Each and every person needs to hear the message of peace, and spread it in some form or another. Only then can the goal be reached. Peace is possible.

Thank you, Greg,

for being a Peace Sponsor.

Congratulations!

-

And thank you, Travelers Insurance,

for your Community Connections

Matching Gift Program.
