July 23, 2014 — PEACE DAY UPDATE:

On Mattie’s birthday last week (July 17), Sen. Mikulski & Sen. Cardin introduced a Resolution 509 to honor Mattie’s life and legacy and in a show of support for our national Mattie Peace Day Campaign. GREAT NEWS! The Senate approved the Resolution! We still have a long road ahead, but we are one step closer on the journey to a peace day for our country.

The Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation
offers condolences and prayers
during this time of loss for all the people that
Dr. Angelou called her family and friends,
and for all people who have been and will be
inspired by her words and life.

Maya Angelou was about as real and Real gets. When writing and speaking, she selected words that celebrate life — all of life, including the tragic and triumphant moments, and all the stuff that happens to get wedged in between. When visiting her home, she cooked you dinner with her own hands while chatting with you from her deep heart and wise mind. When reflecting on life, she challenged you gently to think, and to hope, and to aspire, and to  believe, and strive to simply be your best self — regardless of the past, or the future. Maya Angelou was real, and she was indeed a great woman, and the world is better because of her. I am grateful that Mattie and I had the privilege to call her “our friend.”  – Jeni Stepanek.

A great woman… a great loss.
Peace to our dear friend,
Dr. Maya Angelou.

Three Young Scientists Receive
“Spirit of Mattie” Awards

-

During Spring, 2014, three Arizona students (one each in elementary, middle, and high school grades) were names recipients of the 2nd annual “Spirit of Mattie” Award.  The award was initiated in 2013 by Mike Blishak and Chris Medvescek (former staff members of the Muscular Dystrophy Association) to celebrate scientific aspirations and also honor Mattie — who served as the MDA National Goodwill Ambassador during his final three years of life.

-

According to a statement issued by Medvescek:

-

The Spirit of Mattie Award is given to one student at each level in honor of Mattie Stepanek who died at age 13 from a rare genetic muscle disease for which there is no cure. Although all of his muscles were profoundly weakened, Mattie was an internationally known poet and peacemaker with seven books on the New York Times bestseller list in his short lifetime.  Gifted doctors and medical technology helped him cheat death many times.

=

This award recognizes a talented young scientist who has utilized sound scientific technique in investigating an aspect of muscle strength, human biology or human health. The winner receives a $25 check, some of Mattie’s books, and membership in the international peace club that was started in Mattie’s name after his death in 2004.

-

All of the award recipients somehow relate their science projects to helping people with or research related to one of the neuromuscular diseases covered targeted by MDA. The 2014 award recipients and their project titles are:

=
Jayden Lewis (4th grade)
Settle Down and BREATH!

-

Sylvia Zarnescu (8th grade)
The effects of diet on locomotor activity
and life span in Drosohila

-

Sanne Casello (high school)
One Step Closer to Finding a Cure:
Prevention of ALS in Drosophila melanogaster model

-

Congratulations from Mattie’s Foundation
to all three of these young scientists!
