Longterm substitute teacher, Rachel Brand, requested suggestions
of Mattie poetry to complement a lesson she was creating on “fortitude.”
After receiving suggested readings across Mattie’s seven books,
she sent the following message to Mattie’s Foundation:

Just wanted to let you know that we’ve been reading Mattie’s poems and the kids have really been touched by them. I’ve even had them write some of their own poetry inspired by it. We watched the clip of the tribute to him from Oprah’s 20th anniversary show, and even the boys who usually try to act to act tough and cool were crying. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that his message and spirit live on. — Rachel Brand

Message from Mrs. Newman, who introduced Mattie to her school
– Pangborn Elementary School –
which became our FIRST Peace Certified School in 2013

December 2014 –
Hi Jeni,  I hope all is well.
-
The other day one of my ELL students hugged two of Mattie’s books in my classroom library and said, “Love Mattie.” I wanted to share that moment with you.

We’re also working on Peace is Possible — Choose Peace Theme Activity at Pangborn. One kindergarten teacher showed me the brainstormed ideas in her class and I was amazed at the way kindergarteners were able to express their peaceful thoughts.
