Mattie Continues to Inspire Martial Artists

Mattie J.T. Stepanek, July 1998, after earning his first Black Belt in Hapkido — a Martial Art that emphasizes self-control, self-defense, and respect for oneself and one’s world.

At the age of 4, Mattie began taking Hapkido, a form of Martial Arts that emphasizes self-control and self-defense, as well as respect for oneself, for others, and for the world. He earned his first Black Belt during July of 1998, the same week he turned 8 years old, and enjoyed the role of assistant instructor for children and adults across the next couple of years.

-

Due to the progression of neuromuscular disease,Mattie had to discontinue his training and activities in Martial Arts when he was 10 years old. However, the lessons he learned about respect and perseverance, and about combining his mind, body, and spirit, remained with him for the rest of his life.

 -

Now, more than a decade after Mattie’s passing at the age of “almost 14,” his life and his words of hope and peace continue to inspire others, including students and instructors who are members of the Blind Judo Foundation – which will be a part of the 3rd annual Coachella Valley DisAbility Sports Festival in California during January, 2015.

 -

“What an inspiration Mattie continues to be for so many,” said Ron C. Peck, CFO & Co-Founder of The Blind Judo Foundation in a note to Jeni Stepanek (Mattie’s mom and Executive Director of Mattie’s Foundation). “We love and remember your amazing, loving, and compassionate son. Mattie continues to shine bringing rays of light, hope and inspiration to thousands, not only with his books but his compelling and radiant smile. We have included a quote from your loving son in our press release” about the upcoming sports festival event.
