Peace is possible… choose peace!

-

On July 19, 2014 participants of the 2014 Peace Gathering in the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park came together to (literally) “make peace the news!”

-

The event, attended by children and adults from right here in King Farm and also from all over the world, was covered by two local television stations –

— DCFOX5 (click here to view) and
— TRC (The Rockville Channel – click here to view).

-

Participants shared reflections on Mattie’s life and legacy and peace message for a new documentary project, enjoyed violin music from students at Huneven Music Studio, helped unveil the new “May peace prevail on earth…” Peace Pole donated by Japanese peace activist Yuka Saionji Matsuura, and enjoyed cake and activities to celebrate Mattie’s 24th birthday and his 10 year peace legacy.

-

In addition, the Mayor, Council, and City of Rockville, Maryland were honored for being the first city to declare July 17 (Mattie’s birthday) “Mattie Stepanek Peace Day,” and remarks were shared on behalf of Congressman Chris Van Hollen on the progress towards a national day for peace.

-

Two days after the celebration, the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation received word that the U.S. Senate passed a House Resolution recognizing Mattie’s life and peace legacy, and the Foundation’s campaign for a national peace day in his honor. The Resolution was co-introduced by both Maryland Senators, who have been supporting the national campaign across the past year.

-

The journey to a national Mattie Stepanek Peace Day will take persistence,  and dedication to peace awareness and moving from attitude to action. But, it is a worthy journey, for a worthy and achievable goal. The Foundation encourages and welcomes all support in this campaign.
