Despite thunder and pouring rain
as we began to set-up for the event,

the Peace Gathering  began a bit late,
but grew to become an amazing event!
-
Hundreds of people came to Mattie’s Park —
and participated in peace activities and
celebrated Mattie’s 25th birthday and “Peace Day”
— and then enjoyed 30 full minutes of fireworks
during the City of Rockville’s July 4 party.

“Remember to play after every storm!”

“Indeed, we did!”

Message from Mattie’s mom:

I live in a City that chooses peace, and proclaims Mattie’s birthday as “Peace Day” each year.
-
I live across the street from a park commemorating my son’s peace mission and legacy, where amazing volunteers for Mattie’s Foundation carried out a Peace Gathering for hundreds of folks who enjoyed cake and conversation and music and activities that further peace.
-
I live in a house with Mattie’s and my kin-family – related by life and by choice – and as we all sat together with this “front yard view” of the fireworks, we were in awe.
-
The #‎Rockville fireworks display was huge and long (30 amazing minutes!), and all 26 acres of Mattie’s Park & Peace Garden were filled with holiday revelers – diverse in age and ability and race and religion and nationality – and all cheering together, in peace.
-
As Mattie’s immediate family, we miss him so much every day. But beyond the truth of missing him is the reality of his legacy of peace, and the bonds of love that keep us connected to him, and with each other, in hope – during the good times and also through the tough times, not by chance but rather by choice.
-
Pausing to express gratitude is an important part of peace.
-
I am grateful, to the city, to Mattie’s Peace Crew & Peace Guides, and most of all to my family.
-
Enjoy this small clip highlighting just a brief bit of the fireworks and energy in the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park last night.
