Fall and Winter 2017

A Tradition Lives:
December Prayer

On December 15, tune in to Mix107.3 radio’s Jack Diamond Morning Show with Jimmy Alexander – and celebrate the holiday with a decades-old tradition.
-
Mattie was 9 years old when he wrote “December Prayer” and was 10 when he first began sharing the poem with the “loyal listeners” in the DC, MD, and VA area each holiday season on this program (aka “the showgram”).
-
It turns out that Jack and Jimmy are loyal listeners as well — as they have continued this tradition, even though Mattie left this world 13 years ago (yes, he has been gone as many years as he spent here with us).
-
Every December, they air Mattie’s voice reading this poem — which offers a timeless message of hope and peace for people of all ages and faiths.

Message from Mattie’s Mom:
On Jeni’s Thriving Heartsong

Thank you to all for sharing your lovely and inspirational thoughts in response to this month’s Washingtonian Magazine article about Mattie and me. In many ways, the piece is beautiful. But I do want to re-assure everyone that I am still defying all medical odds, and moving through each day with purpose and gratitude and a celebration of life.
-
I am working and playing and living and praying. Yes, I have many medical challenges and they can be life-threatening, and I rely on much medical support every day – from the ventilator and oxygen to the wheelchair and IV fluids to a pacemaker and more… but despite it all, I look good (yay) and I am doing quite well (super yay).
-
None of us knows how much time we really have on earth. I guess, like Mattie (and many others who have statistical odds stacked heavily against them due to multiple life-threatening conditions), I am keenly aware of the sacred gift of each moment. So – by choice – I endeavor to give depth to each of those moments, which somehow helps me focus less on length of living.
-
That said, I also am hoping to reach my goal: “When I grow up, I want to be 83, and a beach chair philosopher.”
-
I am ever-grateful for ongoing prayers, which I believe has much to do with how well I am doing at this time – despite everything I have been through and continue to go through medically and emotionally.
-
Today, and each tomorrow, I encourage each of you to take a deep breath, and with purpose, exhale with the words “wow!” (about something or someone in your life) and “thank you!” (about you and your gift of life, and the gift you can choose to be for others).
-
Moving forthward with hope and gratitude.
Jeni (Mattie’s mom / Mama Peace).
-
PS — this article should have had a word like “resilience” or “purpose” or “gratitude” or “forthward” or “hope” in the title, and a bit more balance in the text which seemed to highlight the burdens more than the blessings… missed opportunity by the editors, even though the overall piece offers inspiration.

City of Rockville Votes to Make
Peace Day an Annual Event

-
During the July 2017 City Council meeting, the City of Rockville issued a Peace Day Proclamation, declaring Mattie’s July 17 birthday to be a day of peace for local citizens, and stating support for the Peace Day Party celebration. The City has been declaring Peace Day every year since Mattie died in 2004, at the request of Mattie’s Foundation.
-
Since 2014, the Foundation has been campaigning to move the Peace Day concept to a national level. This year, the City of Rockville gave a huge show of support for that effort, by voting to make July 17 “Peace Day” forevermore in the city.
=
The day will be celebrated with an annual peace gathering during which participants will have the opportunity to learn more about Mattie’s peace message, and to better understand how peace begins and grows through activities that bring together inspiration and information, as well as recreation and education — in a festive party atmosphere with music and games and more.
-
The City has also expressed a desire to include elements of Mattie’s peace message and the Foundation’s “Pathways to Peace” program in other events and trainings that support citizens in growing forward together — such as their celebrate diversity and sister city activities.
-
The 2017 Peace Day Party takes place on Sunday, July 16. Join Mattie’s Foundation, the City of Rockville, King Farm Citizen’s Assembly, Mix107.3 Radio, Botanero Restaurant, Fontina Grille, The Black & Tan Band, UPstander Omékongo Dibinga, Rockville Kicks Karate, and dozens of Peace Guide volunteers for an afternoon of music and food and fun (there will even be a moon bounce and face painting!). The event runs from 3 pm to 8 pm in the King Farm Village Green area.

June/July 2017 UPDATE
National Peace Day Campaign

  • The City of Rockville, Maryland and the King Farm Citizens Assembly (local neighborhood) express commitment to making Peace Day an annual event – to be proclaimed each year for July 17, and to be celebrated with educational, recreational, and inspirational activities during a Peace Gathering/Party on a weekend near the date.
    -
  • The leaders are also committed to moving forward with the Pathways to Peace Program and becoming “Peace Certified” as a community, recognizing that PEACE UNIFIES, and the importance of choosing to “Make Peace the News.”
    -
  • The 2017 Peace Day Proclamation will be issued during the July 10, 2017 City Council Meeting in Rockville, Maryland (begins 7 pm). City and KFCA leadership representatives are working with representatives of Mattie’s Foundation to plan the July 16 Peace Day Party to commemorate this event.
    -
  • The Washingtonian Magazine is working on a feature story about Mattie’s legacy, Jeni’s peace work with Mattie’s Foundation, and the National Peace Day Campaign. The upcoming Peace Day Party planned for July 16, 2017 will be discussed in the article!
