Peace Sponsor Spotlight
Parcel Plus, King Farm, MD
Mattie’s Foundation ia blessed with individuals and organizations who support our effort to spread a message of hope and peace. Some of our sponsors donate funds that help us create programs and activities that help people of all ages understand and celebrate Mattie’s vision of a peaceful world. Other individuals and organizations provide in-kind support that makes our day-to-day operations move forward smoothly. Our October 2012 Peace Sponsor of the Month is a family-run business that has provided the Foundation with a free post office box since we were launched as a not-for-profit back in 2005.
Richard and Kim Reynolds are the owners of Parcel Plus in King Farm, Maryland. They met Mattie when he and his mom, Jeni, first moved to the Rockville neighborhood in 2002. “We remember Mattie coming into our store,” Kim said, “but we didn’t really know him that well. Now that we know more about him, we wish we had known him better.”
Kim and Richard may not have had too-much interaction with Mattie before he died in 2004, but since 2005 when Mattie’s Foundation was launched, they have had a crucial role in supporting what mattered most to Mattie — spreading a message of hope and peace. When they learned that we would be in need of a mailing address, they volunteered to serve as the shipping and mailing center for the Foundation. For more than seven years, our post office box has been located in their family-owned business location, courtesy Kim and Richard. Having the support of this family-run neighborhood business keeps the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation communications efficient and local. They also support Foundation activities, and sell Mattie’s books alongside cards and other gift items in their store.
In addition to running the family business, the Reynolds are active in community activities, especially those related to their children such as coaching youth sports or leading scout activities. ”We owe our 10 year business success to excellent customer service,” Kim said. “Whether we’re helping a customer or coaching a soccer game, we live by the Golden Rule. We try to instill this value in our own children. Mattie’s writing is studied in the fourth grade at our childrens’ elementary school, which is exciting for them as we have a common bond with Mattie.”
In her free time, Kim volunteers at her children’s elementary school, helping with holiday parties and with various girl scout activities like camping. “Our Girl Scouts are now Cadettes (middle school age) and really are interested in becoming effective leaders,” she said. “Learning more about Mattie and his mission just adds fuel to their fire in really accomplishing great things.” Richard volunteers as a coach for their son’s 3rd grade soccer team. He also runs an annual golf tournament dedicated to his brother who passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack.
