Rich Gottfried, CPA, MS
Rich Gottfried, CPA, M.S., has served as the Treasurer of local community organizations for decades. When he learned that the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation was in need of a new volunteer to serve in this capacity, he decided that “this opportunity to be the Treasurer of Mattie’s Foundation would be a good opportunity to share my experience with an organization that’s mission of peace is a worthwhile cause.”
After meeting with other members of the Board and discussing the responsibilities of this role with Executive Director, Jeni Stepanek, Rich “joined Jeni’s passion and enthusiasm for the Foundation’s mission, and realized that my professional experience could benefit the Foundation’s needs.
Rich is a longtime Rockville, Maryland resident who earned his B.S. in Accounting from Syracuse University, and his M.S. in Taxation from Georgetown University. As a Certified Public Accountant, he has worked for law firms both locally and in New York City, and has served as a Director of Finance for not-for-profit companies such as theNational 4-H Council, the Children’s Law Center, and Best Friends Foundation. He has also been an adjunct faculty for several universities and colleges, is an active member of many local organizations, and considers “public service to be an honor and a privilege” and provides pro bono tax services for senior citizens.
As Treaurer for Mattie’s Foundation, Rich brings to the Board his 22 years of experience in the auditing and accounting profession. This includes nine years in public accounting as an auditor, ten years in for-profit organizations as a controller, six years in not-for-profit organizations as a Director of Finance, and six years owning his own tax and accounting business.
During his six years working professionally with not-for-profit organizations, Rich has helped small not-for-profit organizations with minimal accounting infrastructure, policies or procedures. After learning more about the programs and activities of Mattie’s Foundation, Rich said, “I believe that I can help the Foundation establish policies and procedures and setup an accounting infrastructure to allow the Foundation to grow to the next level with the necessary infrastructure to maintain the growth.”
