Laura J. Bauer, MPA
Laura J. Bauer, MPA is Director of National Initiatives for the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving (RCI) at Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) in Americus, Georgia.
Co-author of the RCI’s signature training program, Caring for You, Caring for Me – Education and Support for Family and Professional Caregivers, 2nd Edition; Laura has co-authored journal articles in Health & Social Work (2006) Educational Gerontology (2004), Generations (2010), and Aging Today (2012) and contributed chapters to Voices of Caregiving (LaChance Publishing, 2008) and Re-Creating Neighborhoods for Successful Aging (Health Professions Press, 2008). She also teaches two courses in the RCI’s Certificate in Caregiving Program at Georgia Southwestern.
Laura has previously worked as a counselor for at-risk youth at an outdoor therapeutic program and as a child abuse investigator. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Public Administration from Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia and also holds a Certificate in Gerontology from GSW. Laura sits on the Board of Governors for the We Are Family Foundation in NYC and on the Board of Directors of AmericanKidz of Georgia, Inc. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Alpha Alpha, and the American Association of University Women. Laura brings her experience and skills in grant writing, marketing and public relations to the Board.
Watching a Larry King Live show is how Laura was first introduced to Mattie. She remembers being “intrigued and started learning more about Mattie, watching numerous television shows that he was appearing on, and purchasing and reading his Heartsongs poetry books. Working for the Rosalynn Carter Institute, Laura said she was happy to watch Mattie meet his hero, Former President Jimmy Carter.
During July, 2003, Laura worked personally with Mattie when he served as a co-chair of an expert panel on Intergenerational Caregiving with Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter for RCI. A decade later, Laura brought her passion for spreading Mattie’s message of hope and peace to the world to Mattie’s Foundation. Combined with her experience in grant writing and non-profit management, her goal is to ensure the sustainability of the current projects of Mattie’s Foundation, as well as bring in additional funds for future programming efforts. After three years of Board service, Laura was elected to serve as Vice President of Mattie’s Foundation during 2014.
An advocate for social justice, the environment, caregiving issues, and peace; Laura enjoys hiking, camping, fishing, photography, bird-watching, dancing, and music of all genres. She and her dog Katie are a certified Pet Partner animal therapy team; regularly volunteering their services at local elementary schools, hospices, hospitals and nursing homes. Being a life-long University of Alabama football fan, she also enjoys following SEC football.
