Your Questions…

About Mattie’s Foundation

Question from numerous folks:

The first time I sent a comment (or artwork, poetry, peace post…) which was posted on the website (What You are Saying pages, Peace Club Kids pages…), I received an e-mail with a link to my post. I see other material I have sent posted, but I am not receiving notification links for my posts anymore. Why?

-

Response from Jeni Stepanek:

Yes, the first time a child or adult has material posted on Mattie’s website, a link to the content and page is often sent to the contributor(s) so he/she/they can see how their peace attitudes and actions are rippling out through Mattie’s Foundation. However, since one of our goals is to encourage folks to explore peace materials and our website, we don’t usually send out links to addition material submitted by those children and adults. Their contributions are posted and celebrated, but we hope that they are exploring the website and enjoying and being inspired by the posts of other global neighbors as well. Sending that first link helps new contributors learn to navigate the website and take pride in their peace activities. Encouraging folks to then navigate on their own saves the Foundation a bit of management time, and also supports our mission of helping folks move “from attitude to action” with peace activities.

From Rob Windrem via Mattie’s Facebook page:

Hey Jeni, what’s the best gift your Peace Club Members can give you for Christmas?

-

Response from Jeni:

What a beautiful question, Rob. The best gift would be a gift of peaceful action. More than a “Like” on FB. What is peaceful action? Maybe reading an article on Mattie’s website and responding to it in a way that moves peace forward. Maybe encouraging someone to join or gifting someone else with a Peace Club Membership. Maybe a donation to support the mission and work of Mattie’s Foundation. Maybe reading one of Mattie’s books, and then passing it on to someone in need of hope and peace, or purpose. Maybe signing a child up for our free Peace Club Kids program, and then supporting them in creating a monthly art piece or peace post for the website. Maybe saying and role modeling “Peace is Possible” to others, and helping them to realize that this is true. Peaceful attitude (wanting peace) to peaceful action (living peace) — that is the greatest gift for me, for peace, and for our world. Thank you for asking! Peace to you.

Question from numerous folks:

Why do you need people to donate money to Mattie’s Foundation? Can’t you just ask Oprah Winfrey or Jimmy Carter or someone to fund your work? They loved Mattie and believed in his message.

-

Response from Jeni Stepanek:

To folks emailing me and asking why I don’t ask Oprah and Jimmy Carter to give to Mattie’s Foundation in this time of financial challenges — While I would welcome a deep pocket philanthropist or contribution, what I am hoping to secure (that is longer lasting) is the support of the thousands of folks who celebrate Mattie’s message. Hoping $25 for an annual Membership is not too deep a reach into the pocket for many. This amount (less than one coffee per month) would support us in continuing our mission. Also hoping maybe a retired Development specialist may say, ‘I believe and want to help.’ A deep pocket is a one time thing usually. It is wonderful, but I am trying to build something sustainable, and realistic, that benefits all the folks we try to get this message out for, and to. Please do more than “Like” peace here on Facebook — please support our effort to move the message to action. Join Mattie’s Peace Club. Thank you

Question from numerous folks:

Who manages the Mattie Stepanek Facebook page?

-

Response from Mattie’s Foundation:

Jeni Stepanek — “Mattie’s mom” — manages Mattie’s Facebook page. The page was created in 2008 by Canadian Global Teen Leader Sebastian Roberts. Across time, Seb grew older and time was tight as he continued his peace mission in Uganda. Concurrently, Mattie’s Foundation was growing and evolving, and needed a strong social media tool. It was a natural fit. Since 2010, Jeni has been the administrator of the page. When “Messenger” (Mattie’s biography by Jeni) became a NY Times Bestseller in 2011, Jeni Stepanek’s personal Facebook page began transforming into an additional “Mattie page” as more and more people read the book. As of September, 2013, approximately 11,600 folks have “Liked” Mattie’s page and 2,100 folks are “friends” with Jeni’s page. What is amazing is that most of these people are active participants from all around the world who comment on and share our peace posts. Thank you, Seb, for getting us started in the social media world. And, thank you friends around the world for enthusiastically spreading the message.
