Peace Club Kids Respond

to Mama Peace Messages

Four to six times a year, youth registered in ourPeace Club Kids and Peace Club Teensmembership programs receive a Message from Mama Peace” by e-mail. These messages share bits of inspiration from the writings or speeches of Mattie J.T. Stepanek, and suggestions from Mattie’s mom, Jeni, for conversation and activities that support youth as they “reflect, respond, and reach out” with Mattie’s words of hope and peace.

Peace Club Kids & Teens are invited to share poetry and artwork, photographs and peace posts, that are displayed on our Peace Club Kids andPeace Club Teens webpages.

We have received four wonderful pieces of peace art so far this month, from Kaylee D. and Leah D. who live in Germantown, MD, and from Jacob J. and Sammy J. who live in Pittsburgh, PA. It is very exciting to hear back from youth as they learn that peace begins with every thought and word and action, and with every choice we make.

Supporting Youth in Embracing Peace!

New Mama Peace Message

A new Message from Mama Peace has been posted for our Peace Club Kids and Peace Club Teens. Please support youth in embracing peace as an attitude and habit. Sign your child up for our program. Youth ages birth-12 are FREE. Youth ages 13-19 register for only $18 — which includes a free supported Peace Journey through Mattie’s Three Choices for Peace.

Peace Giving – Sponsorships!

Don’t have children? Consider sponsoring a teen for only $18 a year. Peace Giving is a gift that supports peace, and can decrease bullying. We currently have two Peace Teen sponsorships (thank you Natalie Bailey of Altamont, IL and Carol Rain of Chatfield, MN). Your gift can support a teen who wants to participate in our program, but who lacks the resources to register.

Teen Registration

Are you a teen who wants to participate in our supported Peace Journey through Mattie’s Three Choices for Peace? Please sign up in our Peace Shop (Membership & Support page). We will support you in reflecting on Mattie’s message of peace, in responding to the message through an activity, and in sharing your response as your reach out to others with peace.

Mattie’s “Head Elf” Sleigh

Still a Part of the Annual Celebration!

Mattie the “Head Elf” for the annual CHI/United Fantasy Flight chatting with Santa in 2002.

At age 4, Mattie enjoyed his very first “Fantasy Flight” to the North Pole. By age 7, Mattie became an “Elf in Training,” and by age 8 he was serving as the volunteer “Head Elf” for Santa, giving out cookies and punch to the other children and family members on the annual trip. When Mattie died in 2004, Children’s Hospice International and United Airlines – hosts of the annual adventure – retired Mattie’s “Head Elf Sleigh.” Now, Mattie’s sleigh is parked sy the North Pole each year, just outside of Santa and Mrs. Clause’s visiting area, and filled with stuffed animals.

Read more about how and why Mattie became Head Elf in

“Messenger: The Legacy of Mattie J.T. Stepanek and Heartsongs”

written by his mom, Jeni.

Jeni continues to travel to the North Pole for the annual adventure, along with other members of her kin-family, and also with families from Connections Beyond Sight and Sound where she works part time as an Education Specialist.

Mattie’s “Head Elf Sleigh” at the North Pole. This year, a “stuffed service dog” accompanied the sleigh, just as Micah accompanied Mattie to the North Pole.

On Saturday, December 8, 2012, dozens of children and their family members from CBSS joined more than 100 other excited children and family members who were gathering at Dulles International Airport to prepare for a “Fantasy Flight” to the North Pole!

The trip is an annual event sponsored by Children’s Hospice International and United Airlines at Dulles International Airport. For 22 years, children with life-threatening conditions and disabilities have been participating in Fantasy Flight, which offers families a morning of fun and memories. Each passenger receives an official ticket for a flight to the North Pole. Before boarding the airplane, families get into the holiday spirit as they enjoyed music, entertainment, and food. Once on the plane and all the seatbelts are fastened, the pilot heads to the North Pole via that “Secret Reindeer Route” (which amazingly, requires only about 30 minutes of flying!).

After landing, children and families enter “Santa’s workshop at the North Pole” where more entertainment awaits, along with food, fun, games, crafts – and of course, time with Santa, Mrs. Claus, and a host of elves and storybook characters. Children leave the event with photos, gifts, keepsakes from the adventure, and lots of big smiles!

Enjoy the photo collages below of the 2012 Fantasy Flight trip.

Mattie’s Foundation Needs You

Dear Friend of Mattie’s Foundation,

“Peace is possible!

It begins with a choice – our choice.”

This quote by my son, Mattie, summarizes the mission of the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation. Since 2005, our volunteer-based not-for-profit has worked to create programs and activities that support people of diverse ages and abilities, faiths and nationalities, in understanding Mattie’s message of hope and peace, and in choosing peace as a deliberate action. Right now, our world desperately needs hope, and peace.

Mattie had a way of explaining peace so that it was not only believable, but also desirable and achievable. He moved “peace” from an abstract concept to an embraceable reality – something that we can each choose for ourselves, for our communities, and for our world.

Across the years, we have created numerous programs and activities that support children and adults in understanding the message Mattie shared, and in making choices that lead to peace as an attitude, a way of speaking, and a way of being. These programs and activities have inspired and involved people who live in countries on six continents!

Today, we need your help to continue. Our Foundation relies on the generous support of friends like you. Especially during times of economic challenges, a mission of peace is one that is most needed, and yet one that in great need of financial support.

Here are several ways you can help (all gifts are tax deductible):

Like Mattie, we believe that “peace is possible, and peace is for all people.” We want to further Mattie’s message and mission of peace for our world through our programs and activities. Please explore the many programs on our website, and support our effort by sponsoring one of our programs, or by making a tax-deductible donation to Mattie’s Foundation. You may contribute online through our website (www.MattieOnline.com), or mail a donation payable to the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation.

Peace begins with a choice – our choice.

Please choose to support our mission of peace.

Thank you,

Jeni Stepanek, Ph.D.
