About Mattie and this event…

Mattie J.T. Stepanek created seven NY Times Bestselling books of Heartsongs poetry and Just Peace essays before dying due to neuromuscular disease just before his 14th birthday. He was an award-winning peace advocate and a frequent guest on shows like Oprah, Larry King Live, and Good Morning America. Since his death in 2004, the City of Rockville, Maryland (where Mattie lived during his final years) has proclaimed his birthday as a “Peace Day,” encouraging local citizens to embrace peace through education and celebration, and rooted in information and inspiration provided in Mattie’s messages and materials. His namesake Foundation has been campaigng for a National Peace Day since 2014, with the support of thousands of citizens, celebrities, and politicians — including a former president, senators, congressmen, mayors and other representatives. This party and the mission to bring a day for peace to this country will be featured in an upcomong feature article in the Washingtonian Magazine.
